It was on Dec 3rd 1992, when the first text message left a PC and traveled to a Vodaphone mobile device in the United Kingdom. The message said nothing more than "Merry Christmas!", which was all the father of Text Messaging (Matti Makkonen) could think to say.
He had been working on the idea for 7 years, and that simple text message meant the start of a wonderful think for Mr. Makkonen and the rest of the world, at least as far as I'm concerned.
Especially since Matti had originally meant for the text messaging to be a free service to the world, that shouldn't need a patent. That's the kind of generosity we need more of in this world!
Happy 20th Anniversary Text Messaging!
